If I have one piece of advice for anyone visiting the beautiful island of Oʻahu, it’s this: get out of Honolulu whenever you can.
Rent a car. Take the bus. Call an Uber or Lyft. Just… leave town.
Honolulu is undeniably gorgeous and packed with history and culture. There are a few stops you absolutely shouldn’t miss:
- The Pearl Harbor National Memorial
- Touring the USS Missouri
- Exploring ʻIolani Palace, the only royal palace in the United States
That said, you can skip Waikīkī Beach. The sand is imported from California.
The exception? Friday nights, when food trucks line the streets and fireworks light up the sky. It’s fun — just don’t mistake it for Oʻahu’s best beach. ALSO, don’t think you can’t stay there. It’s an affordable home base – just make sure to plan leave it.
For soft white sand without the chaos, nearby Kailua Beach Park is a much better option.
And honestly? Driving the island is never wasted time. Every curve delivers another “pull over immediately” view.
Yokohama Bay (Keawaʻula Beach) 🌊📖

If you asked me to name the most breathtaking beach on Oʻahu, this would be it.
Yokohama Bay feels wild and untouched — lush green hills, turquoise water, and far fewer people than the rest of the island. I spent hours here reading, floating in my inner tube, and snorkeling just offshore.
This is a stay-awhile beach. Bring everything you need.

Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden 🌿🌺
If you want peace, space, and scenery — don’t skip Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden.
This massive garden feels more like a nature preserve, with winding roads, lakes, and dramatic Koʻolau mountain backdrops. You can drive through, walk shaded paths, or lay out a picnic.
Best part? It’s free.

Mānoa Falls 🌧️🌿
Tucked behind a residential neighborhood, Mānoa Falls feels like walking straight into a rainforest movie set. The trail is lush, shaded, and ends at a dramatic 150-foot waterfall.
Easy, scenic, and perfect for first-time visitors.
🥾 Amazon Hiking Essentials
- Tevas are my jam for easy hikes, and wet to dry environments
- OFF! Deep Woods Bug Repellent

Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout & Pali Puka 🌬️⛰️
You can drive straight to the lookout — but if you hike from the stone wall gap, you’ll find Pali Puka, a dramatic hole in the mountain with sheer drop-offs below.
The views are unreal. The wind is aggressive. Respect the cliffs.
Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail ☀️🌊
If you want big views with minimal effort, this is your hike.

The paved Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail offers sweeping ocean vistas — and in winter, prime whale watching. On clear days, you can spot Molokai and Lanai offshore.
Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach) 🐢🌞
It took me two visits to finally meet Punahele — one of the Hawaiian green sea turtles who frequent this beach.
Located near Haleiwa, this is one of the best turtle-spotting beaches on the island. Volunteers are usually present and are an incredible resource — talk to them!
It is not too far from Turtle Bay Resort if you’re looking for a splurge hotel where over 150 movies have been shot! It is the only resort style hotel on the North Shore. Or you can just enjoy the nearby grounds on a day trip.
Hanauma Bay 🌈🐠
Snorkeling doesn’t get more iconic than Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.
This protected marine sanctuary offers calm water, vibrant coral, and abundant fish — even beginners will see plenty. Reservations and an educational video are required, but it’s worth the effort.
Koko Head Crater Trail 🔥🏔️
This hike is straight up — literally.
An abandoned railway staircase leads to panoramic views that make every burning quad worth it. It’s short, intense, and wildly satisfying.
A Quick Note on Exploring Hawaiʻi 🌺
While this guide focuses on Oʻahu, it’s important to say this clearly: Hawaiʻi is made up of many breathtaking islands, each with its own culture, landscapes, and magic.
Maui is open for business, welcoming visitors, and remains an incredible place to explore respectfully and support local communities. The same goes for the Hawaii (Big Island), Kauaʻi, Lānaʻi, and beyond.

The reason this post centers on Oʻahu is purely logistical. I was on a work contract with no flights included, and there are no inter-island ferries in Hawaiʻi — each island requires a separate flight. With limited time and budget during that stay, Oʻahu made the most sense.
That said, I can’t wait to return next year for a much longer, slower-paced trip — splitting my time between Maui and the Hawaii (Big Island), using my Hilton timeshare to really settle in and explore.
This is just one chapter of my Hawaiʻi story — and definitely not the last.
Final Thoughts 🌈
Oʻahu rewards curiosity. The farther you venture from Waikīkī, the more unforgettable the island becomes — wild beaches, lush trails, peaceful gardens, and views you’ll never forget.
Rent the car. Pack the gear. Respect the land and ocean. And go explore.
