I love Fiji — which feels dramatic to say considering I’ve only spent a combined total of about five days there across multiple trips. But some places don’t require long stays to leave a lasting imprint. Fiji is one of them.
Because my time has always been limited, I’ve based my stays out of Port Denarau, using it as a convenient home base for island day trips. If you’re short on time, this setup is ideal — you get access to stunning islands, turquoise water, snorkeling, and that postcard-perfect South Pacific vibe without committing to a long resort stay on a remote island. Each day feels like a mini adventure, hopping between beaches, reefs, and boats, while still returning to restaurants, transportation, and comfort at night.

Where I Stayed (and Why Location Matters)
I’ve been honored to stay at two incredible properties both times using points, and each offered a very different Fiji experience.
I’m a bigger fan of Fiji Beach Resort & Spa — being able to walk or take the Bula Bus to Port Denarau made everything effortless. Restaurants, marina departures, and casual evenings out were all within easy reach. It felt like the perfect balance of resort relaxation and accessibility. See Denarau rooms here.
Sonaisali Island Resort is more remote and tranquil. While farther from town, transportation was seamless — I was picked up directly from the front of the resort for my excursions. It’s quieter, slower, and ideal if you want a true escape.

The Night Sky That Stopped Me Cold
One of the biggest surprises Fiji gave me wasn’t just the beaches — it was the night sky.
I grew up in the Midwest, where open land and low light pollution make for some pretty impressive starry nights. I thought I knew what a beautiful sky looked like. But nothing compares to the stars over the ocean in Fiji. Standing near the water, with almost no artificial light, watching the stars stretch endlessly above the horizon — it feels bigger, deeper, and more cinematic than anywhere I’ve seen.
The ocean reflects the darkness in a way that makes the sky feel infinite. It’s the kind of moment that sticks with you long after the trip ends.

A Garden That Tells Fiji’s Story
One of my favorite non-beach experiences was visiting the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. Tucked at the base of the mountain, this lush botanical garden feels like a hidden oasis — winding paths, towering palms, and thousands of orchids in bloom.
The garden was originally created by actor Raymond Burr, who fell in love with Fiji and began collecting orchids as a personal passion project. Over time, his private collection became one of the most peaceful and beautiful attractions near Nadi.

Fiji’s Indian Influence (and a Temple You Can’t Miss)

Another layer of Fiji that often surprises visitors is its strong Indian cultural influence. Roughly one-third of Fiji’s population is Indo-Fijian, and that heritage is deeply woven into daily life — from food and festivals to religion and architecture.
The most striking symbol is the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple in downtown Nadi. It’s the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere, with vibrant colors and intricate details that feel worlds away from Fiji’s beaches.
Visiting the temple adds cultural depth to the trip and reminds you that Fiji is more than a tropical postcard — it’s layered, diverse, and alive with history.

A Small Luxury That Felt Like a Win: Currency Conversion
Another thing I unexpectedly loved? The currency conversion.
The exchange rate makes Fiji feel like a place where you can treat yourself without guilt. Little luxuries suddenly feel reasonable — meals, excursions, and small splurges that might feel extravagant elsewhere.
One of my favorite examples: buying my first bottle of Veuve Clicquot in Fiji. It felt indulgent and celebratory, made even more memorable by the fact that earlier on the same trip, I had visited one of Veuve’s tasting rooms in France.
Champagne in France. Champagne in Fiji. Same bottle — wildly different vibes.

Fiji as a Genius Layover Destination
Fiji earns a huge gold star as a layover destination.
If you’re traveling between the United States and Australia or New Zealand, Fiji is a smart stop. Fiji Airways flights to Los Angeles are surprisingly affordable for the distance, and using Fiji as a stopover can free up a surprising amount of your travel budget.
In my case, I intentionally planned travel segments around this idea — saving on long-haul flights and redirecting that money into experiences once I landed.

I Cheated a Little — Hotel Points Edition
I’ll admit it: I stayed on hotel points, so my lodging was free.
That alone makes everything feel lighter — waking up somewhere beautiful knowing the biggest expense is already covered. But even without points, Fiji is a destination where you can scale luxury up or down easily.

Five Days Was Enough to Fall in Love
In the end, Fiji feels like a destination that punches far above the amount of time you spend there. It’s scenic, emotionally memorable, logistically convenient, and surprisingly good value.
Five days might not sound like much.
But in Fiji, it was enough to fall a little in love.
